TALACOGON, Agusan del Sur- The death of rising basketball star Rene Clert 'Bobet' Baterbonia has resonated far beyond the Philippines, reaching communities and families across the world, including in the United States.
Among those moved by the tragedy was songwriter and music professional Dr. Rick Hendrix, whose Christian composition, When There Is No Hope There Is Grace, was performed during Baterbonia's funeral service in Talacogon.
The song, which has been embraced by members of the extended family and faith communities in the Philippines, offered a message of perseverance and hope as thousands gathered to bid farewell to the 18-year-old athlete.
Baterbonia was laid to rest on June 24 before thousands of mourners following his death during a team-building activity in Dipaculao, Aurora, on June 8. Fellow Ateneo player Divine Adili also died during the incident.
The tragedy prompted an outpouring of grief nationwide and led to renewed calls for accountability as investigators continued to examine the circumstances surrounding the deaths.
In the weeks following Baterbonia's passing, the family received a significant gesture of support. Through the efforts of the National Housing Authority, in coordination with the Provincial Government of Agusan del Sur and local officials, his parents, Rene Sr. and Rovelyn Baterbonia, were awarded a condominium unit valued at P2.266 million.
For more than two decades, the family had lived in a modest home repeatedly affected by flooding. According to local officials, Bobet often spoke of his desire to provide a safer home for his parents.
"While no home can replace the loss of a beloved son, this act of compassion ensures that his dream for his family will endure," provincial officials said.
Hendrix, whose work in Christian and secular music spans several decades, said the inclusion of his song in the funeral service demonstrated the universal role of faith and music during times of mourning in a Facebook post on his official page.
The performance of When There Is No Hope There Is Grace served as a reminder that messages of hope can transcend geography, connecting communities from rural Mindanao to Washington, D.C.
Baterbonia's legacy continues to grow in the wake of his death. The Talacogon municipal government has declared June 8 as Rene Clert "Bobet" Baterbonia Day, while Ateneo de Davao University announced plans to name one of its covered courts in his honor.
Widely regarded as one of the country's most promising young basketball players, Baterbonia led the Davao Region to its first Palarong Pambansa basketball championship in 2025, earning Most Valuable Player honors and a place on the tournament's Mythical Five.
As tributes continue to pour in, family members and supporters say his influence will be remembered not only through athletic achievement, but through the hope, faith, and unity his life inspired.
